Spa, also known as balneotheraphy, is a water treatment that goes back to prehistoric times. It comes from the believe in the healing powers of mineral waters which is popular around the globe, most notably in Europe and Japan. Places where people can get spa treatment is known as spa towns or spa resorts, and it is very common these places offer thermal or mineral waters for drinking and bathing, as well as other various health treatments.
Historically, the origin of word spa comes from the name of the town of Spa in Belgium, which is known since the Roman times as Aquae Spadanae. This ancient Roman name may have been related to the Latin word "spargere", which means to scatter, sprinkle, or moisten in English.
A lot of people believe that physical and spiritual purification can be achieved through bathing in a particular spring, well, or river. Since pre-historic times man had high hopes in getting a cure of some ailment by travelling to hot or cold springs. This ritual purification exists in various native civilizations as well as various religious ceremonies such as Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Many of these bathing rituals are simple in practice. As opposed to these simple bathing rituals, more elaborate rituals were practiced in Ancient Egypt, pre-historic cities of the Indus Valley, and in Aegean civilizations. Despite the complexity of these ancient bathing rituals, very little building construction around the water was constructed by ancient people; instead, they only built temporary construction.
Nowadays, spa treatments in a form of therapeutic baths have always been very popular in Europe. Similarly in Japan, traditional hot spring baths known as onsen always attracted many visitors to visit. In contrast, up until recently, public bathing in the US received little attention. However, spa treatments in the US have regained its popularity due to the increasing focus on health and wellness.
